Understanding Depression

What is depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad all the time. People with depression oftentimes find it difficult to make it through their everyday lives. Depression can interfere with different aspects of your life including your sleep and appetite. Because depression can have a major impact on your life you should let our providers know if you have any of these symptoms NIMH, n.d.).:

  • Sleep changes (sleeping too much or inability to sleep)
  • Changes in appetite
  • Sudden weight changes
  • No longer feel pleasure in the things you used to enjoy
  • Loss of interest in hobbies
  • Thoughts of suicide or death
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Restlessness
  • Loss of interest in hobbies
  • Unexplainable fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Trouble concentrating (APA, 2013)

Why do people get depressed?

There is ongoing research to determine the exact cause of depression. Current research has identified that depression mayin part be due to biological factors, genetics, environment, and psychological factors. Additionally, an imbalance in the brain’s neurotransmitters (mainly serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) can also impact your mood(NIMH, n.d.).

What treatment options are available?

The first step to treatment and recovery is to seek help from a mental health care provider. Our providers are compassionate and utilize a holistic treatment approach. There are different treatment options available to treat depression including medications and Integrated Psychotherapy. After a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, our providers will individualize your treatment plan based on your personal situation.
